  • • Minister Luciana Santos highlights science's everyday impact during the SNCT.
  • • Museu Geológico da Bahia and Instituto Federal de Alagoas conduct region-specific educational activities.
  • • A 14-meter inflatable humpback whale at Rio's Jardim Botânico offers immersive conservation education.

Brazil's 22nd National Science and Technology Week (SNCT) is underway from October 21 to 26, 2025, with a unifying theme "Planet Water: Oceanic Culture to Face Climate Change in My Territory." The event, coordinated by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), is centered in Brasília but encompasses widespread activities across the country promoting ocean conservation and climate change awareness.

The official opening on October 21 kicks off immersive experiences, interactive workshops, and scientific presentations aimed at bridging science with everyday life. Minister Luciana Santos emphasized SNCT's role in showcasing science's impact on daily essentials such as food and energy, while MCTI official Inácio Arruda noted the event leaves a legacy of belonging to science and encourages sustainable policies.

Regional initiatives contribute significantly: The Museu Geológico da Bahia is hosting a documentary screening on marine clean-up efforts in Salvador and related educational activities. The Instituto Federal de Alagoas in São Miguel dos Campos focuses on student research addressing sea level rise, ocean acidification, and illegal fishing, complemented by community outreach and a sustainable urban garden fair.

In Rio de Janeiro’s Jardim Botânico, a highlight is a 14-meter inflatable humpback whale replica, offering visitors an immersive education on whale anatomy and conservation. This aligns with efforts to raise awareness about marine biodiversity and the perils historically faced by species such as the humpback whale.

Cabo de Santo Agostinho also celebrates its first Municipal Science and Technology Week, running concurrently, with programming that includes lectures and workshops highlighting the ocean's vital role in climate regulation.

Together, these diverse events emphasize the oceans' crucial function in Earth's climate system and the importance of scientific knowledge in fostering sustainable practices. More than 100,000 participants are expected to engage in this largest Brazilian science popularization movement of the year, inspiring collective action to face climate change challenges through science and technology.
