Brazil's Science and Technology Fairs Engage Youth with Climate Focus

Brazilian events promote youth involvement in science and technology with a focus on climate issues and gender equality.

    Key details

  • • IFMS's Science and Technology Fairs showcase over 1,000 student projects.
  • • Programa Futuras Cientistas promotes gender equality in STEM with specific reservations for marginalized groups.
  • • Both initiatives emphasize critical thinking and address climate change themes.

The Instituto Federal de Mato Grosso do Sul (IFMS) launched its 2025 Science and Technology Fairs today, kicking off a series of events across seven municipalities: Campo Grande, Coxim, Dourados, Jardim, Naviraí, Ponta Porã, and Três Lagoas. Over 1,000 projects from students at public and private schools will be showcased, emphasizing a culture of research and critical thinking among the youth. Each participant will receive a certificate, and awards will be given for various categories including best project and best report. This year’s theme, 'Planet Water: the oceanic culture to face climate change in my territory,' highlights pressing environmental issues relevant to local communities.

Simultaneously, the Programa Futuras Cientistas, an initiative by the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, is accepting applications until October 6. The program offers 470 slots with a special focus on female students from diverse backgrounds, including 20% of slots reserved for black, brown, indigenous, or quilombola women. Participants will receive R$ 300 monthly and will engage in a series of scientific immersion activities designed to encourage gender equality in STEM fields.

These initiatives reflect a growing commitment in Brazil to empower youth, particularly young women, in scientific fields and address critical issues surrounding climate change and gender equality in education.
