Amarildo, Brazilian Football Hero and Two-Time World Cup Champion, Faces Health Battles and Neglect

Amarildo, a celebrated Brazilian striker and two-time FIFA World Cup winner, is currently battling severe health issues while largely forgotten by the Brazilian football community. The ex-player, who famously stepped in for Pelé during the 1962 World Cup and scored three vital goals to secure Brazil's second consecutive title, is now hospitalized with advanced Alzheimer’s disease and other grave conditions.

Diagnosed initially with throat cancer in 2011, Amarildo overcame the disease but suffered mental health repercussions due to the treatment, leading to his Alzheimer’s diagnosis in 2018. In 2023, he experienced three ischemic strokes and now depends on a feeding tube while being cared for at Copa Star hospital in Rio de Janeiro. His family has expressed deep disappointment over the evident lack of support and recognition he receives in Brazil, although some former players like Paulo Cézar Caju and Dunga have shown solidarity.

Amarildo’s son, Rildo, lamented the neglect, criticizing the ingratitude of the Brazilian football community. He highlighted that Amarildo’s legacy is honored more in Italy—where he had a successful club career with Milan, Fiorentina, and Roma—than in his home country. Before his international achievements, Amarildo started at Goytacaz and Flamengo, became an idol at Botafogo with 136 goals in 201 matches, and concluded his playing days with Vasco da Gama.

Despite his significant contributions to Brazilian football, Amarildo’s story and sacrifices seem largely forgotten domestically, underscoring a broader issue of neglect faced by many retired football legends. His condition and circumstances evoke pressing questions about how Brazil values its sports heroes beyond their playing days.
