Brazil and U.S. Explore Enhanced Narcotrafficking Cooperation at Defense Ministers' Summit

During the XVII Conference of Defense Ministers of the Americas held in Cusco, Peru, on November 8, 2026, Brazilian Defense Minister José Múcio Monteiro and U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby engaged in a pivotal bilateral meeting focused on bolstering cooperation against narcotrafficking. The U.S. government initiated this 57-minute discussion as part of its broader strategy to identify significant partners across the Americas to strengthen defense collaboration against transnational drug trafficking. Brazil was highlighted by the U.S. as a vital potential ally in this effort.

José Múcio Monteiro acknowledged the importance of the proposed partnership but clarified that combating narcotrafficking primarily falls within the jurisdiction of Brazil’s Ministry of Justice and Public Security. He also referenced ongoing actions by the Brazilian Armed Forces along the country’s borders as part of existing initiatives addressing this challenge. The meeting was described as very cordial and amicable, with both parties sharing converging views on the matter.
