Brazil Boosts Climate Change Research with R$30 Million Funding and National Science Event

Brazil announces R$30 million funding for climate change research in Rio Grande do Sul and hosts the 22nd National Science and Technology Week focused on climate change awareness.

    Key details

  • • Fapergs allocates R$30 million to 11 climate change research projects in Rio Grande do Sul.
  • • Projects focus on governance, risk management, education, and sustainable planning related to climate change.
  • • The 22nd National Science and Technology Week in Sergipe emphasizes climate action with the theme 'Planet Water'.
  • • Both initiatives aim to enhance climate adaptation and public engagement with scientific knowledge in Brazil.

Brazil has recently made significant strides in climate change research and public engagement through two major initiatives announced in November 2025. The Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Rio Grande do Sul (Fapergs), under the Secretaria de Inovação, Ciência e Tecnologia (Sict), unveiled the final results of the edital 05/2025 for the Programa de Unidades do Centro de Referência Internacional de Estudos Relacionados às Mudanças Climáticas (Criec), allocating R$ 30 million to support 11 climate change research projects. Each project has been awarded up to R$ 3 million, focusing on themes such as climate governance, risk management, education, and sustainable planning, addressing both global and regional impacts. This initiative, part of the broader Plano Rio Grande led by Governor Eduardo Leite, aims to enhance the resilience of Rio Grande do Sul to climate change and position the state as a national leader in climate adaptation. As Simone Stülp, head of Sict, highlighted, the knowledge generated will support the formation of public policies centered on safety and resilience. Each project involves collaboration among multiple institutions, fostering research across diverse regional innovation ecosystems in the state.

Complementing this research push, the Instituto Federal de Sergipe (IFS) is organizing the 22nd National Science and Technology Week (SNCT) in November 2025, marking its first dual-stage format. The event's theme, "Planet Water: oceanic culture to face climate change in my territory," reflects a national focus on climate-related issues. Scheduled in the Sertão and Litoral regions from November 13-14 and November 25-26 respectively, the SNCT features round tables, debates, and presentations of research aligning with national scientific and educational goals. Open to the broader academic community, the event encourages public engagement and science popularization. Supported by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) and the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), this initiative fosters dialogue and awareness on climate change challenges.

Together, these efforts underscore Brazil's commitment to advancing climate science research and public understanding, positioning the country at the forefront of national climate adaptation strategies and scientific outreach.
