Brazil's Population Reaches 214.2 Million in 2026, Marking Steady Growth

The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) announced that Brazil's population reached an estimated 214,211,951 as of July 1, 2026, reflecting a growth rate of 0.37% compared to 2025. This marks an increase since the last census in 2022, which counted 203,062,512 inhabitants after a decade-long delay due to the pandemic.

São Paulo remains the most populous city with 11.91 million residents, followed by Rio de Janeiro with 6.73 million, and Brasília with just over 3 million people. Fifteen municipalities now have populations exceeding one million, collectively housing nearly 20% of Brazil's total population, amounting to almost 50 million individuals. Among these, only Guarulhos and Campinas, both in São Paulo state, are not state capitals.

Population growth is particularly robust in the states of Roraima, Santa Catarina, and Mato Grosso, which experienced growth rates of 3%, 1.5%, and 1.5%, respectively. Boa Vista in Roraima is the fastest-growing state capital with a 3.2% increase. Conversely, cities like Salvador and Belo Horizonte saw slight population declines.

The Southeast region holds the largest share of the population at 41.6%, followed by the Northeast at 26.8%, the South at 14.7%, the North at 8.8%, and the Central-West at 8.1%. Overall, the 27 state capitals are home to about 49.4 million people, approximately 23.1% of the country's total population.
