Brazil Strengthens Social Assistance and Food Security with SUAS and Osasco's National Award

In November 2025, Brazil marked significant progress in social assistance and food security through the efforts of the Unified Social Assistance System (SUAS) and municipal initiatives like those in Osasco. During the 25th anniversary meeting of the National Collegiate of Municipal Social Assistance Managers (Congemas), Minister Wellington Dias emphasized SUAS’s vital role in providing social protection and inclusion, noting a substantial reduction in extreme poverty. The event highlighted government commitments to intersectoral strengthening of SUAS, integrating efforts across federal, state, and municipal levels alongside civil society and private sector participation. Concurrently, Osasco was honored with the 'Prêmio Brasil Sem Fome' for its exemplary management of food security policies, notably its Food Security and Nutritional System (Sisan) and innovative projects including the Food Acquisition Program (PAA). Osasco stood out as the only city from São Paulo state to receive this national recognition, praised for its collaborative governance involving public administration, civil society, and private sectors. Mayor Gerson Pessoa attributed the award to strategic teamwork and planning that enhanced the municipality’s capacity to deliver food with dignity and quality to vulnerable populations. Osasco’s achievements will be further acknowledged in a national publication and an official ceremony in Brasília, reinforcing its leadership in food security. These developments underscore Brazil's ongoing dedication to improving social welfare and ensuring food sovereignty for its citizens.
