Coalizão Negra por Direitos and Instituto Marielle Franco Launch Key Initiatives for Racial Justice and Democracy in 2026 Elections

As Brazil approaches its 2026 elections, two significant political initiatives have emerged, aimed at strengthening democratic participation and advancing racial justice in the nation's political landscape. On July 27, 2026, the Instituto Marielle Franco (IMF) launched the Agenda Marielle Franco to mark the tenth anniversary of Marielle Franco's election as Rio de Janeiro city councilor. The agenda consolidates proposals inspired by Marielle's legacy addressing economic, social, and racial justice, public safety, gender and urban rights, public health, cultural justice, climate justice, and notably, the role of sports as a social transformation tool. Luyara Franco, Marielle's daughter and IMF executive director, emphasized that enhancing democratic participation depends on organized collective action and called attention to pressing issues such as violence against women and economic inequality. The agenda also serves as a means to monitor political commitments throughout the electoral cycle.

Complementing this, on July 29, 2026, in São Paulo, the Coalizão Negra por Direitos will officially launch Quilombo nos Parlamentos 2026, an initiative to bolster black candidacies dedicated to racial justice, democracy, and rights. This program builds upon the 2022 edition, which supported over 100 black candidates nationwide. The event will unveil a Manifesto outlining political principles and priorities, with candidates invited to sign a Carta Compromisso, publicly affirming their alignment with the initiative's values. Prominent figures such as Benedita da Silva, Paulo Paim, and Marina Silva are expected to participate. The coalition unites more than 300 organizations advocating for the African-Brazilian movement’s representation in political spheres and international forums.
