Historic Milestone and Support Boost Women’s Football in Brazil

Nívia de Lima has made history as the first woman to act as an assistant coach in a Série A men’s football match in Brazil. During the recent 1-1 draw between Chapecoense and Vitória, Nívia stepped in after the dismissal of Gilmar dal Pozzo. With over a decade at Chapecoense, she has risen through the ranks from youth coaching to becoming the head coach of the under-20 team, marking significant achievements such as winning a match in the Copa São Paulo de Futebol Júnior—the first woman to do so. Nívia symbolizes progress in a sport still dominated by men.

Despite such milestones, challenges remain pervasive in Brazilian women’s football. In 2022, there were only 360 professional female players and 17 referees registered with the Brazilian Football Confederation. Sports journalist Renata Mendonça stresses the importance of visibility, noting the need for role models to inspire women. Former commentator Milly Lacombe highlights solidarity and persistence as key to overcoming structural barriers, advocating for courage and public policies to create safer environments for women in football.

In a positive development for women’s football, Sport Club do Recife announced a sponsorship deal with Hub Health to support their women’s team, Leoas da Ilha. This partnership will enhance resources and visibility for the team, with Henrique Aguiar, the club’s marketing director, emphasizing the importance of valuing and strengthening women’s football. This alliance represents a critical step toward elevating the women’s game by providing necessary support for athletes' success.
