Lenilda Luna Champions Increased Constitutional Funding for Science and Technology in Alagoas

Lenilda Luna, candidate for the Government of Alagoas, has made a strong political commitment to boosting investments in Science, Technology, and Innovation (CT&I) as part of her campaign platform. During her appearance at the Tabuleiro fair in Maceió, she formally endorsed the 'Compromisso com a Ciência' initiative promoted by the Sociedade Brasileira para o Progresso da Ciência (SBPC). This document outlines strategic goals aimed at strengthening public research and valuing universities and research institutes in Alagoas.

Luna emphasized the crucial link between increased scientific funding and enhanced quality of life for the population. She highlighted science and technology’s role in improving family agricultural productivity, combating deforestation, managing water resources, and addressing climate change challenges. A central proposal in her platform is the support for a constitutional amendment to establish a legally binding minimum funding floor for CT&I, similar to those for health and education, thereby opposing any budget cuts in the scientific sector.

Further aligning with the SBPC's agenda, Luna advocates for allocating resources from the pre-salt oil fund to finance CT&I, consistent with Bill No. 5,876/2016. She also aims to raise the portion of Brazil’s Gross Domestic Product dedicated to research and development from the current 1.19% to 2% by 2034. This increase seeks to ensure safer, pesticide-free food and improved standards of living for families in Alagoas.
