The city of Maricá has opened registrations for the inaugural Festival Vozes Negras na Ciência e Tecnologia, set to take place in November. This event, organized by the city’s Secretaria de Ciência e Tecnologia, aims to highlight and promote the contributions of the Black community in science, technology, innovation, and culture.
The festival plans to convene researchers, students, artists, entrepreneurs, and collectives from diverse backgrounds to share knowledge and showcase projects that reflect Black excellence in these fields. Activities will include scientific and innovative presentations, cultural exhibitions, an artisan marketplace, and performances. The initiative also invites participation from artists, artisans, cultural producers, and Black entrepreneurs, providing a broad platform for expression and visibility.
Registrations are open for two categories: one for scientific, technological, and innovative works submitted by Black researchers, students, and collectives; and another for cultural presentations, exhibitions, fairs, commerce, and performances. The deadline to submit entries is October 11.
Sabrina Alves, Secretary of Science and Technology, emphasized the festival's role in fostering representation and visibility. She stated, “Talking about the future also means talking about representation. True transformative innovation cannot occur when parts of society lack space, visibility, and opportunities.”
This festival represents a significant step toward recognizing and promoting Black contributions in scientific and technological fields alongside cultural achievements, setting the stage for increased inclusion and dialogue about representation in innovation.
