National Science Day 2026 Highlights AI Innovation and Science Engagement Initiatives in Brazil

On July 8, 2026, Brazil celebrated National Science Day, underscoring the pivotal role of science and technology in the nation's advancement. The day highlights the crucial impact of artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, and innovation in enhancing various sectors including healthcare, education, finance, and public administration. Antonio Censi, Director of Technology at Montreal, stressed that AI's rapid evolution is the result of decades-long scientific collaboration and research, and emphasized the necessity of continued investment in high-quality research and ethical technology use to maximize AI's potential.

Complementing this technological focus, the Fundação de Apoio da UFMG (Fundep) marked the occasion with the launch of the third edition of the Lentes Acadêmicas competition. This initiative invites students, educators, and researchers from UFMG and 11 other science and technology institutions to submit photographs capturing the essence of daily scientific activities. The competition promotes science popularization and offers prizes such as tablets, smartphones, laptops, and shopping vouchers. Special awards recognize contributions toward sustainable development goals and diversity representation.

Mariana Conrado, Fundep’s communication coordinator, highlighted the foundation’s dedication to raising public awareness about the critical importance of science institutions and professionals to Brazil’s sovereignty. With submissions open until October 23, the competition continues the tradition of linking National Science Day with engagement and visibility of scientific efforts across the country.
