According to a survey by consulting firm Bites, nearly 5,000 posts by presidential and congressional candidates addressed the World Cup, with 220 specifically mentioning Neymar.

Neymar, known for his support of former President Jair Bolsonaro, was frequently referenced in political rhetoric, often with critical undertones towards current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who jokingly called Neymar the 'first home office call-up in the world.' Right-wing politicians dominated the discourse about Neymar, with 15 right-wing posts generating 247,000 interactions compared to 13 left-wing posts that received 18,400. Flávio Bolsonaro from the PL party achieved the highest engagement on Neymar-related posts, which collectively drew 2.4 million interactions.

While right-wing politicians largely defended Neymar, left-wing figures, including some Lula allies such as federal deputy André Janones, adopted a more critical tone. The discord extended even within the right, as Renan Santos of the MBL movement publicly criticized Neymar, prompting backlash from other right-wing members.

In total, discussions involving the World Cup garnered about 19 million interactions across 4,850 posts from 495 politicians. Lula offered goodwill to the team, emphasizing 'grit and determination' to secure Brazil’s sixth title, while Bolsonaro’s faction leveraged symbols like the number 22, associated with their PL party, in political narratives linked to the sporting event.

This intertwining of sport and politics illustrates how Neymar’s role transcends the pitch, becoming a digital battleground reflecting Brazil’s polarized political climate amid the global spectacle of the World Cup.
