In July 2024, Rio de Janeiro reached an unprecedented milestone with 7,315 new business registrations, the highest ever recorded for the month in the 215-year history of its commercial registry, Junta Comercial do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (Jucerja). This achievement marked a 5% increase from the previous July record of 6,970 set in 2022 and a 9.6% growth compared to the same period last year, reflecting robust entrepreneurial momentum in the state.
The total number of new companies registered in the first seven months of 2024 reached 44,158, the best result on record for that timeframe. Governor Cláudio Castro attributed this success to a favorable business environment that fosters job creation, production, consumption, innovation, and competitiveness. Jucerja president Sergio Romay highlighted the agency's efforts to simplify procedures and reduce bureaucracy to encourage further economic and social development.
Among the newly registered businesses, the dominant sectors included office services (1,554), medical offices (1,240), clothing and accessory retail (1,142), and restaurants (1,102). Most new registrations were new establishments (6,810), alongside 386 branch openings and 119 business transfers.
The municipalities with the highest number of new businesses were Rio de Janeiro (22,522), Niterói (2,997), Duque de Caxias (1,651), São Gonçalo (1,428), and Campos (1,057), indicating broad regional growth across the state. This sustained increase not only demonstrates vibrant entrepreneurial activity but also underscores Rio's improving business climate in 2024.
