Senator Jaques Wagner Summoned by Federal Police in Master Case Investigation

Senator Jaques Wagner (PT-BA), a former leader of President Lula's government in the Senate, has been officially summoned by the Federal Police to testify in August as part of the ongoing Master case investigation. This high-profile probe involves allegations against Wagner relating to suspected payments connected to a bank owned by Daniel Vorcaro and a Salvador apartment valued at R$ 2.5 million.

The investigation intensified following an operation in June, which unearthed US$ 55,000 and €33,000 (approximately R$ 471,000) at locations linked to Wagner. Authorities’ scrutiny stems from evidence seized from Augusto Lima, a former partner of the Master company and a close associate of the senator.

Wagner has publicly asserted that the cash found is legally sourced, explaining that the US$ 55,000 represents funds he usually carries for travel expenses, as he prefers receiving per diems in dollars to save money. He has denied any illicit involvement in the case.

In the wake of the investigation, Wagner stepped down as the leader of Lula's government in the Senate, announcing his departure on social media after a two-hour meeting with the president on June 24. He emphasized that the resignation was a mutual decision and stated his primary objectives remain proving his innocence and supporting the re-election efforts of President Lula, Governor Jerônimo Rodrigues, and his own senatorial campaign alongside Rui Costa.

This development comes amid efforts by Wagner to clear his name while maintaining his political commitments ahead of the upcoming election cycle. The Federal Police’s summons marks a critical juncture in the unfolding investigation, placing Wagner directly under further judicial scrutiny.
