UN Report Reveals CEOs Underutilize Technology in Sustainability Efforts

A UN report finds that although most CEOs recognize the importance of technology for sustainability, few effectively use digital tools to achieve their goals.

    Key details

  • • 96% of CEOs see technology as vital for sustainability, but only 27% use digital tracking tools.
  • • Just 26% of CEOs have teams dedicated to scenario planning for sustainability challenges.
  • • Less than 15% feel adequately prepared for macroeconomic and sustainability issues.
  • • 98% believe private sector innovation can advance sustainability; 92% support strong global governance.

A recent UN Global Compact and Accenture report reveals a significant gap between CEO awareness and action on sustainability through technology. While 96% of CEOs recognize the essential role of technology and innovation in achieving sustainability goals, only 27% actually use digital tools to track and measure their companies' sustainability performance. The report, titled 'Turning the Key: Unlocking the Next Era of Sustainability Leadership,' surveyed nearly 2,000 CEOs from 128 countries, highlighting that just 26% have dedicated teams for scenario planning related to sustainability. Furthermore, less than 15% of CEOs feel well-prepared to address macroeconomic and environmental challenges.

The report emphasizes that 98% of CEOs believe the private sector can drive progress through sustainable products and services, and 92% stress the importance of strong global governance and unified policies. Sanda Ojiambo, Executive Director of the UN Global Compact, stated that companies embracing these insights will build resilience and unlock growth opportunities. Daniela Grelin, Executive Director of the UN Global Compact Brazil Network, added there is no going back to outdated business models that ignore social and environmental responsibilities.

These findings underscore a critical need for more widespread adoption of digital tools and innovative practices to embed sustainability into corporate strategies and culture. The UN Global Compact, launched in 2000, remains the world's largest initiative promoting alignment of business with universal principles in human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption, driving sustainable development globally.
