Brazil is rolling out significant support programs to empower small businesses and microentrepreneurs through financial aid and e-commerce expansion. The federal government announced the PixMEI initiative, which aims to provide up to R$ 5,000 to microentrepreneurs starting in 2027 — without the burden of repayment or interest. The program targets assisting 1 million entrepreneurs between 2027 and 2030, prioritizing low-income microentrepreneurs and women, given their greater challenges accessing credit and their impactful role in family care. The initiative also reduces bureaucratic hurdles with a streamlined application process and is part of the larger Prospera MEI package. Prospera MEI includes federal tax debt forgiveness for over 3.6 million registered microentrepreneurs, wiping out more than R$ 18.7 billion in debts. Additionally, annual revenue limits for microentrepreneurs will rise from R$ 81,000 to R$ 110,000 in 2027 and further to R$ 140,000 in 2028, enabling greater business growth under simplified taxation.
Parallelly, Mercado Livre, the major e-commerce platform in Brazil, unveiled a comprehensive plan to accelerate SME growth, capitalizing on Brazil’s booming online retail market—where e-commerce's share has jumped from 5.1% to 17.7% in ten years and is expected to reach 23% by 2029. Mercado Livre’s gross merchandise volume has increased tenfold, with Mercado Pago processing 56 times more payments and generating over half of the group’s global revenue. Key strategies include leveraging social commerce with short videos, live streams, and influencer marketing via programs like 'Venda com Afiliados' and 'Mercado Livre Live.' Advanced AI tools, such as the Sales Assistant, serve more than 30,000 SMEs to optimize advertising and customer interactions.
Logistics expansion is another pillar, with Mercado Livre planning 72 logistics centers by 2026, facilitating 61% of SMEs in reaching new markets. The company also introduced new credit options providing up to R$ 700,000 with seven days of zero interest, in partnership with BNDES and Sebrae, supporting SMEs’ inventory and operational needs. These initiatives were showcased at the 10th Mercado Livre Experience event, which celebrated entrepreneurial success and innovation.
