Brazil's Legislature Debates Health Impacts and Reduction of 6x1 Work Schedule

The Special Commission of Brazil's Câmara dos Deputados is actively discussing the health and productivity implications of the 6x1 work schedule, designed as 6 consecutive work days followed by 1 day off. On May 19, 2026, two public hearings focused on assessing effects on workers' health and the prospect of reducing weekly work hours.

The first hearing addressed health impacts and spontaneous negotiations involving the 6x1 shift, highlighting concerns about mental health strains and the relevance of technological advancements such as automation and AI to productivity and work organization. Labor union representatives provided their perspectives on the challenges workers face under the current model.

Deputy Leo Prates, rapporteur for the PEC 221/19 proposal, announced he will present a report on May 20 advocating reduction of the workweek to 40 hours with two days off and no salary cuts. This echoes earlier attempts dating back to 1995 to trim work hours from Brazil's traditional 44-hour workweek. However, some unions push for an even shorter 36-hour week, emphasizing the need for more rest time.

Mental health concerns were central to the debate, with Deputy Rubens Pereira Júnior noting annually about 500,000 workers miss work due to mental health issues. Representatives also stressed the difficulties young outsourced workers face due to demanding hours, and the crucial importance of safeguarding wages amidst any policy changes.
