On October 1, 2025, Minister of Sports André Fufuca signed the service order to commence construction of the first dedicated Paradesport Gymnasium in the North and Northeast regions of Brazil, located in São Luís, Maranhão. This inauguration marks a significant milestone in support of athletes with disabilities, establishing a state-of-the-art facility designed to promote inclusivity and competitive spirit in various sports.

Spanning 1,600 square meters and set to be operational by 2026, the gym will accommodate numerous paradesport activities such as basketball, volleyball, boccia, 5-a-side and 7-a-side football, and badminton. "This is the first paradesport gym in the state of Maranhão. It is a historic milestone for athletes who carry Brazil's name around the world," stated Fufuca during the official signing ceremony. The Minister underscored Brazil's position as the fifth leading nation in paradesport globally, with aspirations to elevate this ranking significantly in the coming years through continued investment and support for grassroots initiatives.

The Federal Law of Incentive to Sports is funding the project, which will include essential facilities like climate-controlled gym spaces, accessible areas for individuals with reduced mobility, seating for up to 200 spectators, and changing rooms designed with adaptations for athletes' needs. This facility will be named after Cláudio Vaz dos Santos, affectionately known as "Alemão," who was central to the development of Maranhão's sports community until his passing in 2021.

Athletes, such as boccia medalist Géssica Luane, expressed joy over the new gym, stating, "I and my friends dreamt of such a structure. I am very happy for this opportunity." This gym not only highlights a commitment from the government but also reflects a broader goal to enhance Brazil's reputation as a paradesport powerhouse.
